You've had a hard time keeping track of the days, but it's probably been a month since you found the house. It's nice and warm, the owner is almost always preoccupied, and you have a fair amount of food.

As far as a borrower's life goes, you've got it made. Sure, it's loud, but once you got used to the volume and figured out what the human was saying, you found his rambling quite entertaining.

---

The last three times that you’d made your way up to the shelf, everything had gone fine. You were up high, but it didn’t bother you much. In your position, it was hard to have a fear of heights. No, your fear was getting caught. The rational side of your brain figured that the human, Jack, would be nice and gentle. You’d silently watched him for a while, and while he’s been loud, he’s never been destructive. Still, you weren’t mentally prepared to get caught. It was an instinct! Don’t get caught by something thirty times your size.

You took a cautious step from your hole in the wall, watching Jack--er, Jack's shoes with baited breath. They were kicking wildly under his desk as he explained the game he was playing, and you could only hope that he was sucked into he was doing and wouldn't randomly decide to look under his desk.

The first two times you made your way up the shelf, Jack hadn't even been in the room yet, and it made it easier. Today, along with the last time, you woke up late. Last time, everything went fine, so you weren't terribly worried. Jack got pretty sucked into his games.

You moved along the wall, eyes glued on his sneakers. All it took was one ambitious kick to do you in, but luckily his feet were currently poised up against his chair.

Hopping over a bundle of wires, you made it between the desk and wall. Now it was an easy straight shot to the shelf, followed by the most dangerous part: actually scaling the thing. You gripped your climbing gear, a line of string and hook, at your side, and moved swiftly along the wall.

One, two… you launched the hook into the air and it stuck into the lowest rack on the shelf. Your head immediately flew back to Jack and you let out a sigh of relief. He was hunched over and very distracted looking.

Now came the worst part. You tugged on the string and it held, so you started pulling yourself up. Jack continued talking about his game, and it eased your mind, but you still moved as quickly as possible.

Pulling yourself up, you paused and hid behind a creepy looking statue. Jack blocked your view of the screen from this angle, so you needed to go up at least two more rows.

Launching the hook up another shelf, it hooked into the wood and you tested it. It held. With the tiniest huff of confidence, you pulled yourself up another level. Collecting your things, you paused again behind a line of colorful statues and took a deep breath. One more row, you told yourself.

You threw the hook up and it latched into the wood again, but you hesitated when Jack quieted down. Surely something interesting was happening, your brain rationed, he couldn't have heard you.

You studied the back of his head intently, gripping the string. It felt like a staring contest, only luckily he wasn't actually looking at you. After a few quiet seconds, and Jack not moving anymore, you figured you were in the clear.

Steeling yourself, you started to climb up to the next shelf. Jack still looked preoccupied, which you found comfort in. With one last tiny grunt, you hoisted yourself into the air.

You were about two/thirds of the way up when you heard Jack’s chair roll to the side, and shoes quietly hit the floor, almost as if Jack didn’t want you to hear it. But of course you did, because the guy was gigantic.

Your body dangled helplessly, facing the useless backing of the shelf instead of your impending doom. Your eyes darted to the shelf below you, the drop nearly three times your size. You didn’t like your odds, but...

“Whoaa,” Jack breathed behind you, the closeness of his voice making you shudder. “Aaah! Don't jump! Yer so tiny!”

Before you could react in any way, a hand reached up above you and unhooked your string from the shelf and swung you out into the open. The string was twirled around quickly, forcing you to face Jack. His thick eyebrows were twisted together in concern, but he fought back an amused smile that made your stomach churn.

“Ya look a bit stuck there, little buddy,” Jack chuckled, his free hand hovering just below your dangling body.

Your heart pounded in your throat and you could only stare at Jack, dumbfounded. Garbled nothingness escaped your lips.

Jack’s hand lifted up to meet your feet and it shook you from your thoughts instantly. Your grip tightened on your string as you watched Jack wearily, suppressing a gasp. “You can let go of tha string, I gotcha.” He assured, his voice more eager than you’d like it to be.

You quickly replied with a shake of your head, pulling your legs up closer and wrapping them around your string. Jack tilted his head with a smirk and lowered you right into the palm of his hand, raising his eyebrows expectantly.

Y-you weren’t supposed to see me...” you stammered, still tangled up in your string.

Jack snorted, shaking your whole frame. “Wha? I’ve seen ya loads’a times!” Your heart sunk. “Never up close though, only through my camera’n stuff.” With that, he brought his hand right up to his face to inspect you. You could feel the heat radiating off his skin, his bright blue eyes and long lashes all you could focus on.

You wheezed uncomfortably. He offered a toothy grin you couldn’t read. “You gettup on that shelf ta watch my games, dontcha?” he asked, pulling his hand away just slightly, to give you your own bubble of oxygen.

You nodded weakly, swallowing the lump in your throat.

Jack’s eyes drifted past you to the shelf for a moment before gluing right back to you. Your heart skipped a beat. You were dreadfully uncomfortable in the palm of Jack’s hand, but you weren’t exactly sure how you could get out.

“Man, that’s… that’s fuckin’ dangerous! Yer so itty bitty!” Jack exclaimed, making you flinch. “Sorry! Sorry…” His hand wavered close to his chest, and you worried he was about to smother you.

Careful with your words, you chewed your lip for a moment. “C-can.. you put me down?”

“Ehh, sure,” Jack hummed, standing and moving over to his desk. Not exactly what you had in mind. His hands hovered just above the flat surface for a moment before tipping and forcing you to catch yourself. He smirked lightly, but apologized nonetheless. You stayed standing, laughing nervously.

“Yer soo tiny,” Jack laughed, crouching down so his face was level with you. “I thought I’d never catch you-- yer so sneaky!” He bounced excitedly, his hands coming into view and getting dangerously close.

Another nervous laugh. You took a few steps backwards, your foot soon hitting his keyboard. “I kinda… wanted to be on the floor,” you tried.

“What? Why’d’ya wanna be on the floor? What if I step ya! I dun wanna do that!” Your body tensed.

“I’m careful--”

“Ya can just stay wit’ me! No more climbin’ up stuff, ya might get hurt!” Jack gave a big grin, “I make sure ya have food’n stuff, and you keep me company! Deal?” he asked, quickly extending his hand, then finger, for you to shake.

You weren’t sure what to do. While the comfort of always having food sounded nice, having to stick around a human all the time? Everything you’ve been taught told you that was a very bad idea. You needed to get away-- even if it was just to think of an answer without being scrutinized!

“Uhhuh…” You chewed your lip, focusing on the finger in front of you. “Can… I get my stuff?

Jack’s eyebrows rose and he pursed his lips thoughtfully. “Well, I guess so!” Jack started to reach for you, but pulled away, frowning. “Hey, no! How do I know yer not just gonna leave?”

You forced a nervous smile and pulled your hand out to shake his… finger. “I promise?”

Jack whined, obviously skeptical, but brought his entire fist towards you and grabbed your arm, shaking it roughly. “Alrighty, where’s yer stuff?” he asked, pulling you up into the air by your arm and setting you down in the center of his palm. To your (and your probably-bruised shoulders’) dismay, he seemed to be enjoying himself.

After collecting yourself, you glanced around his room, searching for your little hole in the wall. Of course, it wasn’t good that you were giving up your home and hiding spot, but you were kind of backed into a corner.

“It’s… back behind your desk,” you admitted, gasping as Jack quickly moved to duck down onto the floor, nearly cupping you against his chest.

“Really?” he asked, snooping around under his desk. You huffed uneasily, the fabric of his shirt brushing against your head as he moved around. “Is… is that it?” he asked, making you shudder from how his voice vibrated through your entire body.

Slipping out of his hand, you hit the floor and turned to face him to see if he noticed. Of course he did, but luckily he made no motion to grab you. Testing your limits, you started walking towards the crack in the wall but stopped, feeling your side. Your climbing gear!

You turned back to look at Jack, who was smiling innocently. He pulled something off the desk and showed it to you: a length of string and a small hook at one end. “Dun worry, I’ll keep it safe,” he assured. “Leverage.”

You frowned, stunned for a moment. “I’ll come back,” you replied, before turning on your heel and heading towards your home.

As a borrower, you were used to always feeling like someone was watching you, but actually, really being watched? It felt much creepier.

Either way, once you were back in familiar territory, you took a deep breath and slid down against the wall. “Ohh boy.”
